False labor

Also called: Braxton Hicks contractions

Irregular uterine contractions that prepare your body for real labor without causing the cervix to dilate.

When it comes up: Third trimester

You feel them as a tightening in your belly that comes and goes unpredictably. Unlike true labor, these contractions do not get stronger or closer together over time.

Drinking water, getting some rest, or changing your position usually helps stop them. If the contractions become regular and painful, you may be in actual labor.
