Preeclampsia

Also called: Pregnancy-induced hypertension

A serious medical condition associated with high blood pressure and protein in the urine during pregnancy.

When it comes up: After week 20 of pregnancy

Preeclampsia affects blood vessels and can reduce blood flow to the placenta, impacting your baby's nutrition and growth. It can also affect your liver and kidney functions.

Common symptoms include severe headaches, vision changes, and sudden swelling in the face and hands. If you experience any of these symptoms, you must contact your doctor immediately.
