Melasma

Also called: Mask of pregnancy

Dark patches that appear on the skin, especially the face, due to hormonal changes during pregnancy.

When it comes up: Second and third trimesters

The rise in estrogen and progesterone hormones stimulates excess melanin production in your skin. Sun exposure makes these patches more noticeable, so it is essential to use sunscreen daily.

Don't worry, in most cases, this melasma gradually fades on its own within the few months following birth.
