Meconium
Also called: First stool
The thick, sticky, dark greenish-black substance that forms your baby's first stool.
When it comes up: First days after birth
Meconium is made up of materials your baby swallowed while in the womb, such as amniotic fluid and skin cells. Passing it is an excellent sign that your baby's digestive system is working efficiently.
Sometimes, the fetus may pass meconium inside the womb before birth. If this happens, the medical team will carefully monitor your baby to ensure they do not inhale this substance into their lungs.
