Labor induction

Also called: Inducing labor

The use of medications or medical techniques to stimulate uterine contractions and start labor before it begins spontaneously.

When it comes up: Week 40 or later

Your doctor may suggest inducing labor if your due date has passed, if your water breaks without contractions starting, or if there is a health risk to you or your baby such as high blood pressure.

Methods include softening the cervix or giving intravenous medications to stimulate the uterus. You might feel that induced contractions are stronger and peak faster than natural labor.
