GBS screening
Also called: Group B Strep test
A routine swab to check for a common type of bacteria that is harmless to you but can be passed to your baby during birth.
When it comes up: Usually between weeks 36 and 38
Many healthy women naturally carry this bacteria without any symptoms. The screening is a quick, painless swab of the vagina and rectum.
If the result is positive, you will be given intravenous antibiotics during labor to protect your baby from contracting a serious infection.
