Fetal lung maturity steroids
Also called: Antenatal corticosteroids
Steroid injections given to the mother to accelerate the development of the fetal lungs when premature birth is expected.
When it comes up: Usually between weeks 24 and 34
These injections significantly reduce the risk of your baby developing breathing difficulties, bowel problems, and internal bleeding if born prematurely.
They work best when the last dose is given between 24 hours and one week before the birth. It is a vital preventive measure that saves the lives of premature babies and gives them a better start after birth.
