Colostrum

Also called: First milk

The first nutrient-rich milk produced by your breasts in late pregnancy and the first few days after birth.

When it comes up: First days after birth

This milk is thick and yellowish, and is packed with antibodies that act as your baby's first natural vaccine. Although the quantity is small, it perfectly matches the size of your newborn's stomach.

Colostrum helps your baby pass their first stool (meconium), which reduces the risk of jaundice before your mature milk comes in.
