Amniotic fluid

Also called: Water (amniotic sac)

The clear, slightly yellowish liquid that surrounds and protects your baby inside the womb.

When it comes up: Throughout pregnancy

This fluid acts as a cushion protecting your baby from bumps, and helps maintain a constant temperature. It is also essential for the development of your baby's lungs and digestive system as they swallow and breathe it in.

The amount of fluid is measured during ultrasound scans, as too little or too much fluid can indicate complications. When your "water breaks" in preparation for labor, this is the fluid that leaks out.
